It's the oldest question in gaming, and the answer depends on what you play, who you play with and how much you like to tinker. Our gaming specialists break it down.
Cost
A console is the cheaper way in: for around $450 you get everything you need to play. A capable gaming PC starts at about $1,100, though games are often cheaper and you can use the PC for work, too.
Performance and visuals
A mid-range gaming PC with an RTX 4060 matches or beats a current console, and a high-end build with an RTX 4080 is in a different league, with higher frame rates and ray tracing.
Library and friends
Consoles have exclusive games and are easy for couch co-op. PCs have the biggest library, mods and free online play.
Want simple, social gaming for less? Buy a console. Want the best visuals, mods and a machine that does more than games? Build or buy a PC.
