Storefront assistant and privacy
The chat assistant for shoppers, how to configure it, what data goes to the AI provider and what to put in your privacy policy.
The storefront assistant#
A chat bubble on your storefront where shoppers can ask things like "show me dresses under $80" or "what is your return policy?". The assistant answers in text and shows matching product cards; it can also answer shipping and returns questions from your own policy pages.
It works in three modes:
| Mode | When | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| AI | AI enabled and a provider configured. | Natural conversation grounded in your catalogue. |
| Demo | Demo mode on. | Template answers, labelled as demo. |
| Fallback | AI off or not configured. | A smart catalogue search that understands product types, brands and budgets, and quotes your policy pages. |
The assistant only recommends products that were found in your catalogue; it cannot invent products or prices.
Settings#
AI Studio > AI Settings > Storefront shopping assistant:
| Setting | Effect |
|---|---|
| Show the assistant on the storefront | Master switch for the chat bubble. |
| Assistant name, Welcome message | Personalise it. |
| Accent colour | Leave empty to use your theme colour. |
| Suggested questions | One per line, shown as quick replies. |
| Position | Where the bubble sits. |
| Show on mobile | Hide it on small screens if it crowds your design. |
| Allow order status questions | Logged-in customers can ask about their own last three orders (status only: no addresses or payment data). |
Each visitor is limited to a number of messages per minute (10 by default), and the conversation history window is limited, to protect your AI budget.
Tip
Replies are shown as plain text with product cards underneath. Test the assistant on your storefront with a few real questions (and with AI off) before you leave it on.
Review summaries#
When switched on, product pages with at least three approved reviews show "What customers say" with pros and cons. The summary is cached and refreshed when reviews change.
Privacy#
Tell your visitors
When AI is enabled, prompts leave your server and go to the provider you chose. Their data policy applies to that data.
What is sent:
- Admin tools: only the fields you fill in on the tool form.
- Insights: aggregated store numbers. Customer names, e-mails and addresses are never sent.
- Storefront assistant: the shopper's message and public product and policy facts. Do not encourage shoppers to type personal data.
- Review summaries: the text of approved reviews.
What Sellora stores: AI Logs record usage metadata only (tool, model, token counts, duration, errors), not prompts or answers. Storefront chat conversations are stored so a shopper can resume them in the same session or account.
Provider API keys are stored encrypted and are never sent to the browser or logged.
Privacy policy wording#
Add a short paragraph to your Privacy Policy page such as: "Our website offers an optional AI shopping assistant. Messages you type into it are processed by [provider name] to generate answers. Please do not enter personal or payment information." Adapt it to your legal situation. If you want no data to leave your server, use Ollama on your own server, or leave AI off.
